Trauma is often addressed in psychotherapy with Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) or Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) two of the leading treatments, both of which are available with your therapist at Outer Coast. We can use nature-based modifications to these evidence-based approaches. We also have the Safe and Sound Protocol available to clients. Discuss with your therapist which approach or combination of treatments will be best for you. Book a free consult to discuss your options.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing – EMDR
Check out this introduction video on EMDR from EMDRIA, our certifying and training body.
EMDR is a therapy that involves the body in the therapeutic process using bilateral stimulation (BLS), movement or stimulation on both sides of the body while your focus on your negative experiences. We will work together to find the right form of BLS for you. Nature-based modifications include walking down a trail, rubbing stones or other creative options we can use outdoors or indoors.
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy – TF-CBT
Trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy involves psychoeducation, practicing relaxation strategies to calm the body and mind and creating a trauma narrative to tell your story out loud, through writing or in other creative ways.
Safe and Sound Protocol
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is an auditory nerve stimulator that uses filtered music to improve the nervous system’s ability to regulate itself. It involves psychoeducation on the function of the autonomic nervous system and 5 hours of listening therapy in the context of your counselling sessions. The Safe and Sound Protocol can also be modified for nature-based therapy by utilizing it in a safe, natural environment with your therapist.
